    Modified Atmosphere Packaging (MAP): Freshness Protected

    From the moment herbs are harvested, a clock starts ticking. Oxygen, moisture, and microbes all begin to chip away at their potency, aroma, and color. For tea bag cuts and botanical powders, these changes happen fast. Once lost, the essence can’t be restored.

    This is where Modified Atmosphere Packaging (MAP) comes in. By adjusting the air inside our bulk packs, MAP may help botanicals remain closer to their natural state during storage and transport.

    Why conventional packaging isn’t enough

    Standard bags can protect from dust and spills, but they often can’t manage oxidation, moisture shifts, or microbial activity. For delicate materials like chamomile, rose, or ginger, this may result in a faster loss of aroma and flavor, fading of natural actives, and a higher chance of spoilage.

    How MAP works

    MAP changes the air inside the package in specific ways:
    • Nitrogen replaces oxygen, which can slow down oxidation
    • Carbon dioxide has been shown to suppress certain microbes
    • Custom gas blends may be adjusted to suit each herb’s chemistry
    We have an OxyMeter, where we can measure the precise percentage of O2 and CO2. Together with hermetic sealing and barrier films, this combination can help create a more stable environment for botanicals.
